Henry Legler Regional Library Renovation

In partnership with Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White, the Legler Branch Library was transformed into a regional library for Chicago’s West Side. The 36,000-square-foot library underwent significant renovations to add new programs and services. Interior improvements included a reconfiguration of the existing floor plan; the addition of new program, community and study spaces; an increase in collections and technology; accessibility and life safety improvements. Improvements to the building included new BAS and updated mechanical system; electrical, lighting, fire protection; and technology infrastructure. Exterior improvements included masonry repair & restoration, new roof, exterior site lighting, parking lot, and security enhancements.

Once the renovations of the Legler regional library were complete, Kerry James Marshall’s monumental painting “Knowledge and Wonder” was installed in the 2nd-floor gallery. Legler Library also serves as the first CPL location to introduce an “Artist in Residence,” creating a studio space where a community artist will develop art projects and host adult, teen, and family arts programs.
